Many power generation systems contain parts which thermally cycle and are susceptible to corrosion. This environment, along with the manufacturing process, can predispose the parts to premature failure.
We can monitor stresses produced during manufacturing. Stresses can be beneficial, as in the case of compressive stresses which help prevent cracking. Likewise, stresses can be detrimental, as in the case of tensile stresses which can be introduced during manufacturing and service.
Surface enhancement techniques such as shot peening can introduce helpful residual stresses. By measuring residual stresses, the effects of any harmful stresses discovered can be mitigated. Materials Testing’s nondestructive techniques can quickly and easily provide a direct measurement of the residual stress state of a variety of power generation components.
