Heavy
Machinery
Residual stresses can be of great importance to any industry which operates or manufactures any heavy machinery.
By keeping track of the residual stresses in the various parts of these machines, it is possible to monitor the physical integrity of the part and potentially prevent catastrophic failure. Components of interest can range from the sun gear in a combine to the boom of a construction crane.
In either case, very large and powerful equipment relies on the physical integrity of all constituents to operate safely and as intended. Materials Testing’s nondestructive x-ray diffraction techniques can quickly and easily provide a direct measurement of the residual stress state of a variety of elements where it may be of concern. All measurements are done in accordance with ASTM E915, ASTM E2860, and SAE HS784.
