Medical
Components

Residual stresses can be of great importance for medical components. When a medical component fails, it is often due to one of a few processes, including stress corrosion cracking and fatigue.

Mechanical testing can be used to predict the product’s usable lifetime. Measuring the stress state of a part before and after testing can provide insight to the useful life of the part. The body is well known to be a harsh environment, capable of causing metals to fail due to processes like fatigue and stress corrosion cracking.

By monitoring the stress state, harmful stresses can be detected before they cause complications due to stress corrosion cracking or fatigue failure. TEC Materials Testing’s nondestructive techniques can quickly and easily provide a direct measurement of the residual stress state of parts to determine if harmful or beneficial stresses are present. We have the capability to measure parts made from a variety of crystalline materials.

Measurements conform to ASTM E915, ASTM E2860, and SAE HS-784.
